princess Diana momThis Mother’s Day we honor some of the most famous (and often controversial) working mothers.

Princess Diana

Diana, Princess of Wales was born July 1, 1961. She was born into an aristocratic family. Her parents were divorced as a result of her mother having an affair. Diana was raised by her father. She married Prince Charles of England on July 29, 1981. Millions watched the nuptials which the media dubbed as the, “fairytale wedding.” Her marriage was anything but “fairytale” and the couple divorced. After her divorce, Diana entered into a life of public service. She worked diligently to relieve suffering of children, including an appeal to stop the use of landmines. She was fierce in her insistence that her children be raised to understand the common man–taking them to amusement parks and McDonalds. Of her work she said, “don’t call me an icon, I’m just a mother trying to help.”

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton wears many hats. Besides being a mother she has held three U.S. titles: First Lady (wife of President Clinton), U.S. Senator (state of New York), and now Secretary of State for the Obama Administration. She has been a long time advocate for working women and children. During her stint as First Lady, Hillary worked diligently on several bills including the Clinton health care plan, State Children’s Health Insurance Plan, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act. She wrote a book about children’s welfare titled, It Takes a Village, and Other Lessons Children Teach Us. Hillary said this about being a mom, “I think it’s a false trade-off to say quality time vs. quantity – you have to have both.”

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is one of the most talented and controversial actresses in Hollywood. The daughter of actor Jon Voight, Angelina is an award winning actress and a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. She had her breakthrough roll as a costar in the drama, Girl Interrupted. However, she is probably best known as Lara Croft, Tomb Raider. Twice divorced, she met her current mate, Brad Pitt, on the set of the film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The couple have three biological children and three adopted children. She credits being a mom for giving her stability and self confidence, ” For a long time I didn’t love myself and I could see all of my flaws, but when I became a mum, I felt really beautiful and I felt a lot of love come out of me.” She continued on how motherhood has changed her, “Becoming a mother has grounded me and made me understand love and life in a very different and real way.”

Roseanne Barr

Roseanne Barr was everyone’s favorite mom during the 1990’s. Her sitcom, Roseanne is still considered one of the most realistic sitcoms about American family life. She raised many eyebrows about the parenting skills of her famous character Roseanne, especially when she made such comments such as, “This is why some animals eat their young.” Roseanne is the daughter of a Jewish family that kept their beliefs secret, even going as far in their charade as to attend Mormon services. At the age of 16, she was hit by a car and suffered traumatic brain injury, which she says is the cause of her erratic behavior later in life. A mother in real life, she has this to say about motherhood, “There’s a lot more to being a woman than being a mother, but there’s a hell a lot more to being a mother than most people suspect…I know how to do everything – I’m a Mom.”
