May 31, 2011 | | Leave a comment In recognition of the growing demand for more higher education courses online, the Purdue University College of Education is now offering a master’s degree that is 100 percent online. This is the first time the university has offered such a program. The online degree being offered is a Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology. This degree program will serve as an alternative to the traditional face-to-face program. Both the online and face-to-face programs teach students how to design and implement instructional materials for institutions, ranging from elementary schools to engineering plants. Timothy Newby, educational technology area convener at Purdue, said a decrease in the number of applications for face-to-face master’s programs was one reason for developing the program and that the online option helps to fill that gap by reaching a different type of audience. “There are a lot of individuals out there who can use our area in various different organizations, but most of them are working full-time and they don’t have the capabilities of quitting their work and going to school face-to-face,” Newby said. “In two years time, they can get their master’s degree while working full-time, and they can be anywhere in the world doing it.” Online Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology The curriculum of the online M.S. in Education in Learning Design and Technology incorporates the latest research in learning theory, educational technology, and instructional design principles and encourages students to use their work experience as a framework for study. Faculty members are active researchers in the field and bring years of experience as well as new ideas to the classroom. Learning design has applications anywhere people need to be taught and trained—not just in education but in business, health care, the military, and many other fields. Students benefit from the diverse backgrounds and expertise of their classmates, allowing them to see different ways design principles can be put in place. Monetary Advantages of Taking The Program Online One advantage for students taking the online version of the course is a decrease in cost. Online students eliminate the cost of travel and/or living expenses on campus. Certain students can also expect a reduction in tuition costs. According to James Lehman, associate dean for discovery and faculty development in the College of Education, in-state students will pay the same rate as if they were coming to campus. However, out-of-state and international students will pay a rate that is less than what they would pay if they were taking the face-to-face program. This figure will sit somewhere between the traditional class’s out-of-state and in-state tuition rates. “For out-of-state students, it’s a little bit of a bargain,” Lehman said.
